BANGOR, Maine — A former Sebec woman was cleared of forgery and theft charges in connection with the 2008 theft of nearly $20,000 from an elderly blind man who summered in the small Piscataquis County community, according to the district attorney’s office.
Elizabeth “Bess” Cutler and Herbert Swartz initially were charged with the crime in December 2008. Swartz pleaded guilty to the charges and paid restitution.
The charges against Cutler were dismissed in November 2009, according to a document filed at the Piscataquis County Courthouse at that time by District Attorney R. Christopher Almy.
Cutler, who now resides in Kittery, recently asked that the Bangor Daily News look into the case and publish a follow-up story. A BDN story at the time erroneously reported that Cutler paid part of the restitution. Records show Swartz paid the entire amount.
