NEW SHARON, Maine — A New Sharon man is facing charges after allegedly attempting to elude police at a high rate of speed.

Cpl. Nate Bean of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was on routine patrol on Route 2 shortly before 7 p.m. when he clocked Benjamin Savage, 21, going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to Sheriff Scott Nichols.

Bean tried to get Savage to pull over, but he did not comply, turning onto Weeks Mills Road as Bean followed, according to Nichols.

Savage’s speed was clocked as high as 92 mph on Weeks Mills Road, and he pulled over after a short pursuit that lasted only a few miles, Nichols said.

Savage confessed to running from police because he was scared despite his two passengers, a male and a female in their early 20s, pleading for him to stop, according to Nichols.

The passengers were not charged.

Savage was arrested and charged with eluding an officer, driving to endanger, driving more than 30 mph over the speed limit and possession of marijuana. He was taken to Franklin County Jail.
