CAMDEN, Maine — Residents overwhelmingly agreed to have the town borrow up to $550,000 for an upgrade to the town’s sewer system.

At a special town meeting Tuesday night, about 20 people turned out to approve the project, which will replace pumping stations at Sea Street and Mount Battie Street.

Former Select Board member Anita Brosius Scott questioned why the town did not have this bond issue go out to voters at last month’s general election.

“I object to a special town meeting. It boggles my mind why this was not done in November,” Brosius Scott said.

Town officials agreed that a special town meeting was not the best choice but said the work needs to be done to replace pump stations that have long outlasted their working life.

Select Board member John French Jr., who had criticized the School Administrative District 28 Board for scheduling a Feb. 10 referendum for the new middle school, acknowledged the decision by the town for a December vote could face the same criticism.

“I guess I am eating a little crow,” French said.

Resident Stephen Gold urged approval, saying that it was important to protect Camden Harbor from sewage overflow.
