AUGUSTA, Maine — A Bath man was arrested Tuesday morning at the Maine State Museum after attempting to leave with a 2-year-old girl, state police said.
James Cavallaro, 58, is facing charges of assault and violating conditions of release, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
Capitol Police is the Department of Public Safety’s bureau that provides security and police services to the State House and other buildings around Augusta.
McCausland said officers were dispatched to the museum around 11 a.m. when they received a report from staff that Cavallaro had grabbed the toddler and tried to leave with her.
The girl was with her grandmother at the time, and a museum receptionist who saw the incident intervened and the girl was released, McCausland said.
The child’s grandmother had turned her back to hang up coats in the museum’s coast room when the incident occurred, McCausland said.
Cavallaro, who was on bail on an unrelated charge out of Sagadahoc County, was taken into custody without incident when found in the parking lot.
He was taken to Kennebec County Jail.
