CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service’s office in Caribou has issued a flood advisory for the Aroostook River in northern Maine effective through 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Ice jams have formed in the river resulting in very high water levels from Washburn to Presque Isle, the weather service said in an advisory posted late Wednesday afternoon.
At that time, the river was bankfull — or at the stage at which it was at the top of its banks — from near Washburn to Crouseville with some minor overland flooding, meteorologists reported.
They warned that water levels can fluctuate very abruptly as ice jams move or release so anyone living or driving along the river should monitor river conditions closely.
