MADISON, Maine — A VFW commander is accused of running an illegal gambling operation out of VFW Post 7865 in Madison.
State police say an Anson man gave payouts to people who played video poker. Police say Louis Padula, the commander of the post, illegally made payouts to people who played a video poker game.
The 71-year-old was arrested Tuesday and charged with unlawful gambling and tampering with evidence. An investigation into the post began in January after police received a tip.
Authorities say Padula tried to hide the evidence from police and coached witnesses on what to say. But members say they believe their commander is innocent.
Padula said over the phone that he’s hired a lawyer and believes the truth will come out on May 6 when he is scheduled to be in court.
Padula is still the acting commander at the post but his bail conditions forbid him to come to the post or contact any witnesses.
