MADISON, Maine — Police have identified the motorist who was killed Tuesday morning in a collision on Route 201.

Amy Bowman, 49, died at the scene of the accident, according to Madison police Chief Barry Moores.

Moores said the accident happened shortly before 11 a.m., when Bowman lost control of her 1990 Ford Explorer and skidded into the path of a 2011 Dodge flatbed wrecker driven by Kenneth Ashe, 39, of Skowhegan.

Bowman was wearing a safety belt when the accident happened, Moores said. Ashe was not injured, he said.

It appears a vehicle defect was a factor in the accident because Bowman’s sport utility vehicle lost its left rear wheel, Moores said. The vehicle will be inspected, the chief said.

The accident remains under investigation, Moores said. He said the Madison police are being assisted by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, which mapped the crash, and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, which reconstructed it.

The Maine State Police’s commercial vehicle and inspection units have been notified because of the possible defect, he said.
