WINTHROP, Maine — A Winthrop couple were taken to a Lewiston hospital Tuesday after their vehicle sideswiped a telephone pole on Route 135, according to police.
Edwin Ward, 70, and his 63-year-old wife, Sarah Ward, were traveling north at the time of the crash, according to Winthrop police Officer Paul Ferland.
Ferland said Edwin Ward was driving, and the crash was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m.
The officer said the vehicle drifted off the road and sideswiped the Central Maine Power pole on the passenger’s side. Sarah Ward had to be extricated from the vehicle, but neither her nor her husband suffered injuries considered life threatening.
CMP crews checked out the pole at the scene and reset the transformer, Ferland said.
He added that the vehicle was destroyed.
Route 135 was closed for about 45 minutes while crews worked at the scene.
