Each week the BDN Maine Outdoors team takes a look at different gear you might need for your next outdoor adventure. For this week’s Gear Bag, we looked at the paddles from Old Town Canoe Co.

What is it? Choosing the right paddle for your kayak or canoe will make your trip more enjoyable by allowing you to strain less while paddling. Luke LaBree, marketing communications manager of Johnson Outdoors Watercraft Inc., explained that getting the right paddle that fits your needs and is the right size will help you can get the performance you want out of it.

Why do I need it? There are many types of paddles — a more traditional single blade wooden paddle or a double-bladed kayak paddle. One thing to consider when buying a paddle is how long of a paddle you need. Typically a longer paddle would work best for a taller person or someone with longer arms, but it also depends on the type of boat you are in. A boat that is a little higher off the water and a little wider will need a paddle that is a little longer so you can reach further without having to stretch and lean, which would throw your balance off.

How much does it cost? Paddles range anywhere from $39 to $100 in the Carlisle line. Carbon fiber, composite paddles will run anywhere from $300-$400.

Where do I find it? Carlisle paddles are available at Ski Rack in Bangor.

Capturing sports isn't just about the peak action shot, it's about capturing who these people are and how hard they worked to get where they are. This is what this blog will help show. Not only will...
