PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Sea Dogs couldn’t muster any offense against the Trenton Thunder on Thursday night, dropping the first of a four-game series at Hadlock Field by a final of 5-0. It marks the fourth time the Sea Dogs have been shut out this season.

Greg Bird and Eric Jagielo delivered back-to-back doubles to give Trenton a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Sea Dogs starter Mike Aguilera. Gary Sanchez followed with a single that got past Sea Dogs left fielder Oscar Tejeda and allowed another run to score to make it 2-0.

Four of the five runs scored by Trenton in the game came with two outs.

After being battered by the Sea Dogs in his last start in Trenton, Thunder starter Caleb Smith worked five scoreless innings and allowed just four hits while walking two and striking out five.

Trenton pitchers combined to strike out 14 Sea Dogs in the game, a new season high for both teams.
