PORTLAND, Maine — Four people and their pets are safe after a fire damaged three Portland apartments Tuesday.

The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. on Clark Street. Four tenants are displaced.

Firefighters say the occupants and their pets, including a cat and a gecko, made it out safely.

The fire went from the basement to the second floor. The fire department says the three units are uninhabitable until repairs can be made.

No word on where or how the fire started.
