Streamside Clean Up

AREA — The annual Streamside Clean Up events, hosted by the Bangor Area Storm Water Group, needs volunteers to take part in efforts scheduled for May:

Volunteers will help clean up litter in neighborhoods, parks and roadways, and help keep garbage out of local streams and rivers.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to participate. Come by yourself or bring a team. Gloves, bags, safety vests and water will be provided. The event will be held rain or shine. Volunteers are advised to dress accordingly.

Maps of the stream coverage area will be provided to designated team leaders the day of the event.

Take out bean supper

ALTON — The cooks of Alton United Methodist Church will hold a takeout bean supper 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 16. The meal will consist of one quart of yellow eye or pea beans, one pint of cole slaw, one half-dozen yeast rolls and one 8-inch pumpkin pie.

Transportation for All rally

BANGOR — A rally by a local action group known as Transportation for All was held April 22 in Pickering Square.

The group was supported by area elected officials, clergy, the Faith Linking in Action organization, bus drivers, University of Maine-Augusta’s Bangor campus representatives, passengers, community groups and ATU Local.

Transportation for All will survey passengers, would-be riders and community members about their transportation needs in hopes of improving service, possibly running later into the evening or adding Sunday routes. Many people use the bus for transportation to jobs and need expanded service to get to work later in the evening and on Sundays. Faith leaders encourage Sunday service, so community members can attend worship services, organizers said.

Speakers at the event included Bangor City Councilor Gibran Graham, the Rev. Dr. Stan Moody of Columbia Street Project-Columbia Street Baptist Church, Angela Bickford of Faith Linking in Action, Ed Knutson of ATU Local, the Rev.Dr. Mark Doty of Hammond Street Congregational Church and several regular bus riders.

UCP newsletter

BANGOR — Breaking Barriers, the new UCP of Maine newsletter was released on April 15 by mail, email, and web and social media postings.

Newsletter editors are seeking submissions from caregivers and family, co-workers, medical providers, clinical staff, and the community.Topics may include recent and upcoming events, client success stories, department features, question and answer pieces, and other information that helps readers learn about UCP of Maine, now in its 60th year, in a fun and creative way.

The next newsletter will be published on July 15.

Brewer Historical Society

BREWER — Brewer Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in the meeting room, Brewer First Methodist Church, 40 South Main St. Author Mark Alan Leslie will discuss his novel, “True North: Tice’s Story,” which follows the adventures of an escaped slave making his way along the Underground Railroad. The story culminates at Brewer’s historic Holyoke house. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Benefit yard sale

CORINTH — Safe Place Food Pantry will hold its May Madness yard sale 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the food pantry, 328 Main St. A variety of items will be available, from cleaning to cooking to pet foods to paper products. Proceeds from the event will go to maintaining and improving the building to better serve the surrounding communities. The food pantry feeds approximately 800 families a month with new signups each week, sale organizers said.

Cemetery clean up

FRANKFORT — The Pilgrims Home Cemetery Association will hold a clean up session 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 9, at the cemetery in Monroe. Frankfort residents who have family members buried at Pilgrims Home Cemetery are invited to drop by and help with the cleanup and lot repairs. Organizers said any amount of time that can be given will welcomed and appreciated.

Benefit supper

HERMON — Penobscot Snowmobile Club, Hermon Rescue Squad and Hermon Fire Department are collaborating to raise funds for the purchase of a rescue toboggan, snow sled and other trail rescue equipment. A spaghetti supper to benefit that effort will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the Hermon Rescue Squad building, 262 Billings Road. The event also will offer a 50-50 raffle, silent auction and door prizes.

The cost is $5, $15 family.

Day trip

VEAZIE — The Maine Atlantic Salmon Museum has organized a day trip to the Rangeley and Oquossoc Outdoor Heritage Museum, leaving the Veazie Salmon Club at 7 a.m. and returning by 4 p.m. Saturday, May 30. Email Claude Westfall for details at CZWestfall@aol.com.
