Cross Insurance has purchased another Rhode Island insurance agency, expanding its reach into southern New England.

The company announced Tuesday it purchased the Westerly, Rhode Island-based Schonning Insurance, which does business in southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut.

Cross did not disclose the sale price of the latest acquisition. The company in January hired a former vice president at a Massachusetts-based insurer to lead an expansion into southern New England.

The latest acquisition is the second Cross has announced this year. It acquired the Wellesley, Massachusetts-based Corcoran & Havlin Insurance Group in March.

Cross has about 700 employees operating out of offices in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida.
