Shipmates’ reunion

AREA — The 2015 reunion of all USS Boston shipmates will be held July 16-19, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for all former crew members of U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, flag personnel and family members of USS Boston CA-69, CAG-1 and SSN-703 ships.

Shipmate’s reunion

AREA — The USS Iwo Jima (LPH2/LHD7) Shipmates Organization’s reunion will be held Sept. 13-16, at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The reunion is for all ship’s company and embarked U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel who were on board the LPH2 or LHD7.

Yard and bake sale

BANGOR — A giant yard sale and bake sale will be held rain or shine 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, by Volunteers of America at Miller Square Senior Housing, 315 Harlow St. Baked goods will be available, and breakfast and lunch will be served. Proceeds will benefit the Community Meal Fund.

AARP meeting

BANGOR — Penobscot Chapter 374 AARP will meet at noon Tuesday, June 2, at the Elks Club, Odlin Road. A catered lunch will be served. The cost is $10.

Bangor Daily News columnist Sara Smiley will be the guest speaker.

Installation of 2015-2016 AARP Chapter officers will be held.

Spaghetti supper fundraiser

BANGOR — A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held 4-6 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Hammond Street Congregational Church, 28 High St. The event will benefit Wendy Colavecchio of Orono who received a serious leg injury when she lost control and crashed the motorcycle she was riding. Book talk

BANGOR — Frida Berrigan, author of “It Runs in the Family: On being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood,” will speak and do a book signing at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 5 at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow St. A vegetarian potluck supper at 6 p.m. will precede Berrigan’s presentation, and will be followed by the center’s general assembly meeting at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Ladies Night Out

OLD TOWN — Ladies Night Out will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Old Town Elks Club. The event will features local vendors, music and food. Admission is free. Old Town Elks Club. Proceeds go to support the new City Reach Music Cafe at 10 Middle St. in Old Town. The music cafe will provide free music lessons to youth and coffee for the community.

Garden club plant sale

BREWER — The Brewer Garden and Bird Club will hold its annual plant sale at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Brewer Historical Society, 199 Wilson St. Members will be on hand to give advice on planting. Photos of all plants at maturity will be available.

Members of the historical society will have coffee, muffins and plant related items such as gardening gloves and plant pots available for purchase.

Camp scholarships fundraiser

BREWER — Cate’s Camp Dreams, which raises money to offer scholarships to children who could not otherwise afford to go to summer camp, will hold a giant yard sale, bake sale and craft fair, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at 2 Family Circle in Brewer, rain or shine. Wednesday On Main

BUCKSPORT — The newly created Wednesday On Main series will feature a live event on Bucksport’s Main Street 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays all summer. From puppets to Gypsy jazz to award winning film, the program offers something for every age group.

Kicking off the series will be Maine’s own Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers presenting “The Legend of the Banana Kid,” on Wednesday, June 3, at The Alamo Theatre, 85 Main St. Admission is by suggested donation of $5.

Wilson Museum

CASTINE — The Wilson Museum, on Perkins Street, will kick off its summer season on Wednesday, May 27, with a new exhibit, “Mainely Wabanki: A Sampling of Authors and Artists,” featuring words, images and artifacts from Maine’s Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes. Programming to enhance and expand upon the exhibit will include storytelling, drumming and quill work. The Wilson Museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 30. Admission is free with donations accepted. School classes and other group tours may be scheduled by calling 326-9247.

Great Giveaway

HAMPDEN — Community Church of the Open Door will host its fourth annual Great Giveaway

8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 30, at the church, 270 Main Road North, Route 1A. The event will feature hundreds of donated items that will be given away, on a first-come, first-served basis, to individuals and families in need. From books and games to appliances; housewares and furniture to clothing; everything is free.

The Great Giveaway will be held rain or shine, No item is given away in advance and no one is admitted before 8 a.m. There is a limit of three large items per family. All other items are unlimited.

To donate new or gently used and very clean items of any kind, contact the church office at 862-

4010 for office hours or make a delivery before or after any Sunday service, 8:30 a.m.-noon during May. Any items delivered on the day of the event must arrive no later than 7 a.m.

Donations of clothing or shoes should be sorted and marked for adults or children. Donated items should have no missing parts or be in disrepair. No items of an inappropriate nature

will be accepted.

Green Thumb plant sale

ORONO — The 59th annual Green Thumb plant sale and food sale will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 30,  at the Church of Universal Fellowship. No early birds please.

Gardening enthusiasts will find a large selection of perennial plants, seedlings, shrubs and trees. Shoppers will also find a selection of geraniums, petunias, pansies, lobelia and salvia. All perennials come from local gardens, are reasonably priced, and more likely to do well. Knowledgeable gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and give advice.

The food sale will offer freshly baked cookies, bars, pies and bread.

Fort Knox news

PROSPECT — The Friends of Fort Knox report that it was a busy weekend May 16-17 at Fort Knox. Approximately, 400 Boy Scouts camped out at the historic site. They took part in the camporee sponsored by the Waldo District Spring Camporee Committee and hosted by the Friends of Fort Knox.

Also, on Saturday, foster families from throughout Maine converged on the fort for a day of fun and food, hosted by the Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine.
