KENNEBUNK, Maine — A man is dead and another injured after an early-morning fire at a Cat Mousam Road residence, the Department of Public Safety said.

The fire, which was reported about 2:30 a.m. Monday, claimed the life of Kyle Szlosek, 25, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, according to spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Szlosek’s father, Paul Szlosek, 62, is being treated for smoke inhalation at Maine Medical Center, while Paul Szlosek’s other son, Jonathan Cressey, 31, of Suffolk, Virginia, was able to escape via a second-story porch roof, McCausland said.

Cressey was able to get his father out via a first-story bedroom window once on the ground, but the body of Kyle Szlosek was found on the second floor, McCausland said. He died of smoke inhalation.

McCausland said the two sons were in Maine visiting their mother, who is in the hospital.

According to fire investigators, the blaze started in the living room because of smoking or a malfunctioning computer. McCausland said the home had no working smoke detectors, which would likely have given the family enough time to escape.

Szlosek’s death is the eighth fire death in Maine this year.
