CASTINE — The Maine Chapter of the Fulbright Association will host a morning of presentations on the Arctic, climate change and the Fulbright Scholar Program at Maine Maritime Academy on Friday, July 10. The public is invited to attend the three presentations, which are offered free of charge.
A breakfast and networking session 7:30-8:30 a.m. will precede morning presentations. Later in the day, a dinner and presentation will be given by Captain Richard (Rick) Miller who will speak on the subject “Arctic Sailing on the Bowdoin: Memoirs of a Captain” at The Manor Inn in Castine.
All programs are open to the public. There is a cost for breakfast and dinner programs.
The location and schedule of presentations and related events are as follows:
- 7:30-8:30 a.m. Maine Maritime Academy, Alfond Student Center, Harborview Room, Castine.
Continental breakfast and networking session, open to the public. The cost is $6 at the door.
- 8:45-11:45 a.m. Speakers and presentations, free and open to the public:
Dr. Paul Wlodkowski, professor of engineering, Fulbright Scholar, Maine Maritime Academy, “Fulbright in Russia: Advancing Global Maritime Education.”
Dr. Paul Mayewski, director and professor, Climate Change Institute, University of Maine,
Is climate instability in our future? Or, is it already here? The Arctic and Its Impact.”
Capt. Ralph Pundt, Thompson School of Marine Transportation, Maine Maritime Academy, “Current Trends and Initiatives in the Operation of Vessels in Polar Waters.”

These events will take place at The Manor Inn, Battle Avenue, Castine:
- 5-8 p.m. Cocktail hour, dinner and presentation, open to the public.
- 5-6 p.m. Cash bar.
- 6-8 p.m. Dinner and a presentation given by Capt. Richard Miller will cap the evening with stories of sea adventures in the northern and Arctic waters of the Atlantic. A three-course dinner at The Manor Inn will include salad, Tuscan roasted chicken, Parker House rolls and peach cobbler. A vegetarian option is available. The cost of the dinner is $37 at the door.
