CALAIS, Maine — Officials are investigating a fire that damaged the garage area of Johnson’s True Value Hardware on Sunday.

Crews from five communities, including two from New Brunswick, were called to the business at 10 Sunday morning, Calais Assistant Chief Ken Clark said.

Heavy smoke was coming out of the garage area when firefighters arrived, but they were able to knock the fire down quickly, Clark said.

The assistant chief said the building suffered smoke damage. The state fire marshal’s office is attempting to determine a cause and was on scene Monday.

Firefighters from Calais, Baileyville, Alexander, St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and Oak Bay, New Brunswick, responded.
