ROBBINSTON, Maine — The operator of a pickup truck is facing charges stemming from a crash that occurred while firefighters and police were dealing with another incident on Route 1 on Monday.

About 11:40 a.m., members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Robbinston Fire Department received a report of a fire in a vehicle being towed behind an RV, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Firefighters had closed one lane of Route 1 and a deputy was speaking to the owner of the RV when a blue Ford Ranger, traveling an estimated 45 to 50 mph with its horn blowing, entered the closed travel lane and came close to first responders, according to the release. The vehicle swerved back into the open lane of travel and struck a Toyota Yaris head-on, sending both vehicles into a field, officials reported.

The driver of the Toyota, Judith Robinson, 62, of Eastport, and her two passengers, Victor Mahar, 21, and Amanda Dennison, 39, were taken to Calais Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The operator of the pickup, a juvenile, also was taken to the local hospital. His two juvenile passengers were not injured, the release said.

The investigation is continuing, according to the release, which states that the juvenile is facing charges without elaborating on what they are.

Efforts to reach the sheriff’s office Monday for information were unsuccessful.
