ROCKLAND, Maine — A 71-year-old man who claimed he was fired from his car sales job because of his age is highly satisfied with the settlement reached in a lawsuit, the man’s attorney said Tuesday.
Attorney Andrews Campbell did not release details of the settlement but said it was highly satisfactory to all parties, including his client, Joseph Castelluci. Castelluci filed a lawsuit in March against Shepard Chrysler Dodge Jeep, alleging age discrimination.
“He’s glad to be able to move on,” Campbell said.
The attorney for the car dealership, Frederick Finberg, was not immediately available for comment.
The case was resolved during a mediation session held on June 10, according to court records filed in Knox County Unified Court. A stipulation of dismissal was filed Monday.
Castelluci claimed in the lawsuit that his manager would make derogatory comments about older people to him in front of the other employees. Those comments included that “once people reach 75 years old, they should be killed” and “this would solve a lot of problems,” according to the lawsuit.
Castelluci had worked at the dealership from February 2002 until he was let go in June 2014. He claims that before he was fired, the business hired a 20-year-old man who was given Castelluci’s office.
The company denied those allegations in its response to the lawsuit.
Campbell said Castelluci has gotten a job selling cars at another dealership, where he has been named a salesman of the month this year.
