BANGOR, Maine — A brief but heavy downpour was cited as the cause of nearly half a dozen vehicle crashes along a 50-mile stretch of Interstate 95, a Maine State Police sergeant said early Friday evening.

The downpour, which caused vehicles to hydroplane, happened about 5:15 p.m., during the busy evening commute, Sgt. Alden Bustard said.

“It was kinda like after the first snow of the season,” he said.

Crashes were reported at mile markers 162 in Plymouth, 186 in Bangor near Stillwater Avenue, 194 near Old Town, 211 in Argyle and 213 in Edinburg.

Bustard said that no injuries resulted from the accidents.

The crash scenes were all cleared within less than an hour, he said.
