ALFRED, Maine — A female inmate was injured Thursday night in an apparent suicide attempt at the York County Jail, according to Sheriff William King.

The 53-year-old inmate, whose name was not disclosed, had been distraught about her legal situation and jumped over a second-floor railing around 8:30 p.m., the sheriff said.

The distance from the railing to the floor below was about 12 feet, King said.

The woman suffered broken bones and a concussion and was rushed to Southern Maine Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
