ST. GEORGE, Maine — An Appleton man was charged Monday night with breaking into a home and assaulting a woman.

Clair W. Mitchell, 38, was arrested Monday night and taken to the Knox County Jail. He was charged with criminal trespass, domestic violence assault, assault and refusing to submit to arrest.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded after a woman reported around 11:30 p.m. Monday that she woke up to find Mitchell in her room at a residence in St. George, according to an affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court by the sheriff’s office. Another man in the house fought with Mitchell and got him out of the house.

Sgt. Lance Mitchell later spotted Clair Mitchell, who was riding a bicycle in Tenants Harbor. The suspect fled on foot and was chased and captured by the sergeant. The Appleton man fought but eventually was subdued by the officer, according to the affidavit.

Bail was set at $2,500 cash.
