SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The vessel Argo ran aground on Peaks Island on Tuesday after breaking free from its mooring, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.
No signs of pollution were found by police and Coast Guard personnel, and attempts to refloat the vessel at high tide were not successful.
According to the statement, the vessel had serious damage and broke into pieces along the shore.
The Coast Guard determined cleanup responsibilities will lie with the vessel’s owner. Coast Guard officials will follow up to ensure the efforts will be completed and no hazards or environmental risks are present.
