PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police on Thursday arrested three men in connection with the death of Fred Akoa, whose body was discovered Tuesday in a Cumberland Avenue apartment.

Abil Teshome, 23, Mohamud Mohamed, 36, and Osman Sheikh, 31, all of Portland, are charged with the murder of the 49-year-old man, according to a release from Assistant Chief Vernon Malloch.

The three suspects were already in custody at the Cumberland County Jail on unrelated charges and remain there without bail pending arraignment Friday or Monday.

Akoa’s body was discovered Tuesday in his apartment at 457 Cumberland Ave. by representatives of the building management company who were checking his well-being at the request of a family member, police said at the time.

An autopsy was performed on Okoa’s body by doctors at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, but police on Wednesday declined to release the results, saying only that it appeared to be an isolated incident.

Police announced Wednesday afternoon they were investigating the death as a homicide.

Citing an ongoing investigation, no photos of the suspects were released. No additional information was immediately available.
