BANGOR, Maine — A city police canine has been awarded a bullet-proof and stab-protective vest, Sgt. Tim Cotton announced Tuesday.

Canine Officer Aki was awarded the vest thanks to a nonprofit organization, Vested Interest in Canines, Cotton said. The vest was sponsored by Madeline Hamersley of Sorrento.

Vested Interest in Canines is a charity located in Massachusetts, whose mission is to provide protective vests and other assistance to police dogs throughout the country.

The nonprofit agency was established in 2009, and more than 1,546 protective vests have been provided in 49 states.

The suggested donation for one protective vest is $1,050, while each vest has a value between $1,795 and $2,234 and a five-year warranty.
