WATERVILLE, Maine — A suspicious box was found on the campus of Colby College outside a science building early Sunday morning, according to police.

Colby security notified Waterville police after finding a fireproof lockbox outside the Davis Science Building around 8:30 a.m., said Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

The box was subsequently turned over to Waterville police, who contacted a Maine State Police bomb squad team to investigate further, Rumsey said.

The bomb team opened the box using a hydraulic device and were able to determine there were no explosive materials inside. Rumsey said the box was empty.

“We still don’t know where the box came from,” Rumsey said. “Nothing that has been reported stolen.”

Nobody has been charged, and the incident remains under investigation.
