ROCKPORT, Maine — Town leaders are preparing to celebrate the town’s 125th birthday.

In advance, the Select Board is creating an ad hoc Celebrate Rockport Steering Committee, as well as various subcommittees, and is inviting town residents to join.

Rockport became a town in 1891 when it split from Camden.

There will be plenty of opportunity to get involved with planning and executing the ongoing festivities in multiple ways, Rockport stated in a news release. Those who want to contribute on any level are encouraged to sign up by emailing the town office, or stopping by the office to sign up.

The Select Board will officially create the committee Sept. 14 at a regularly scheduled board meeting that begins at 7 p.m. in the Rockport Opera House meeting room. Then, the real work will begin.

At a board workshop Aug. 25, initial discussions concluded that the town will commemorate its 125th birthday by celebrating Rockport’s vibrant and creative community — its past, present and future — in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on fun and inclusivity.

Bring your ideas to the table, and celebrate Rockport.
