OLD TOWN, Maine — Maine State Police detectives continue to investigate the deaths of two people whose bodies were found Monday inside an apartment they shared on Water Street, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday.

Police released the man’s name on Tuesday but are still withholding the name of the woman, McCausland said. He said early Wednesday that the woman’s name would probably be released by the end of the day, but he sent an afternoon email saying that would not be the case.

“Work continues by the medical examiner’s office to establish her positive ID, and that work will not be completed this afternoon,” McCausland said.

The bodies of Mark Savage Jr., 33, and the woman, who is believed to have been his roommate, were found on Monday after the couple failed to meet with an acquaintance, who called police asking for a welfare check, McCausland said.

The couple were last heard from on Sept. 1, and the apartment was locked when police arrived.

Old Town police Sgt. John Loring said he could not answer any questions about the case because it is being handled by the Maine State Police’s Major Crimes Unit North.

“They’re taking the calls,” the sergeant said.

A message left for Lt. Troy Gardner, commander of the Major Crimes Unit for the northern part of the state, was not immediately returned.

The property manager at the apartments where the couple lived declined to comment on the deaths or answer questions about how long they had lived in the building, which is located next to the Napa Auto Parts store.

“I don’t know nothing. I don’t think anybody does,” he said, declining to identify himself.

He said residents are upset by the deaths in the building.

Investigators hope to confirm the woman’s identity Wednesday.

Autopsies conducted Tuesday by the state medical examiner’s office show no signs of foul play. Toxicology tests have been ordered, which may assist the medical examiner in determining whether the deaths were drug-related, McCausland said.
