ALBION, Maine — A 57-year-old local man died Friday afternoon in a boating accident on Lovejoy Pond, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service said in a news release.
David Fann, 57, had been fishing with his father, Arville Fann, when the canoe the two were in capsized due to a shift in weight caused by their movement, Cpl. John MacDonald said.
Both men then entered the water, MacDonald said.
Owen Pierce of Lisbon, who was fishing nearby, heard hollering, went to where the canoe overturned and helped both men to shore.
David Fann was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. There were no lifejackets in Fann’s canoe, MacDonald said.
The cause of Fann’s death has not yet been determined and the medical examiner’s office has been notified, MacDonald said. He said Fann’s body was released to Gallant Funeral Home in Waterville.
Maine State Police, Albion and China rescue personnel and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
