PORTLAND, Maine — A former letter carrier who dumped mail instead of delivering it in Saco was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to a year of probation, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Jason A. McIntyre, 41, of Biddeford also was ordered to pay a $500 fine.
McIntyre waived indictment and pleaded guilty in June to one count of destruction of mail, according to information posted online in the court’s electronic case filing system.
In pronouncing sentence, U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen observed that McIntyre made a poor decision that caused a lot of inconvenience and could have been worse because the mail sometimes contains irreplaceable items, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
By pleading guilty, McIntyre admitted that on Nov. 19, 21, 23 and 25, 2013, he did not deliver all the mail to Saco residents on his route.
Instead, McIntyre threw 576 pieces of mail addressed to 115 different addresses into the trash at the Saco Valley Shopping Center, according to the press release. The discarded mail was found by a mall maintenance man.
“When confronted, McIntyre admitted to throwing out the mail to avoid having to bring it back to the annex and face management,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.
