BRUNSWICK, Maine — Police reported Wednesday morning that they found the body of a missing Texas woman not far from where she was last seen.
Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said the Maine Warden Service found the body of 30-year-old Lisa Marie Cox in a wooded area about 150 feet across Maquoit Road from the house in which she had been staying.
Waltz said police suspect the cause of death to be suicide, but a Maine State Police evidence recovery team and the state medical examiner would make the official decision.
Cox was reported missing at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. Police and wardens had searched for her throughout the day Tuesday and early Wednesday after family friends — Waltz called them “her surrogate family” — reported her missing.
The search involved an airplane, tracking dogs and teams of wardens and other searchers who combed the wooded area and shoreline in a section of Brunswick that mixes residential developments with undeveloped land not far from Brunswick High School.
Cox, who grew up in Brunswick, had for the last three years lived in Dallas, Texas, with her boyfriend, whom police declined to name.
The two recently returned to Brunswick.
Cox and her boyfriend argued Monday night, apparently about cigarettes, Waltz said Wednesday. She left the home wearing a navy blue sweater and dark blue skirt with leggings but without her cellphone.
Maquoit Road remained closed to traffic from Remington Way to Rossmore Road at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and police said it would likely remain closed for several hours.
