HERMON, Maine — Fire crews from Hermon and six nearby communities were able to quickly stop a fire on Union Street on Thursday before it could cause major damage.
The fire at 2699 Union St. began shortly before 6 p.m., Hermon Fire Chief Ray Pipes said Thursday night. The adult son of the homeowner was at the residence at the time and called 911 after finding smoke in the living room.
The fire made its way into an exterior wall and climbed up to the ridgepole before it was halted by firefighters, Pipes said. While there was some fire damage, it appears that most of the house’s contents will be salvageable.
The fire started near a pellet stove, though that is not being cited as the cause at this time, Pipes said. He said the state fire marshal’s office will be in Hermon on Friday to help determine the cause.
The homeowner’s name was not immediately available but Pipes said it appears that the house is insured. He said the people living at the home indicated that they would stay at their camp in Clifton.
Pipes said crews were at the scene until about 8:40 p.m. Assisting Hermon were firefighters from Bangor, Levant, Hampden, Carmel, Glenburn and Stetson.
