THOMASTON, Maine — The Thomaston Dog Park Association held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and officially opened the new dog park to the public on Saturday.

The association has been working for more than a year, planning, fundraising, clearing and preparing land, and with the help of many generous community members and businesses, the double-gated fencing has been installed, according to a news release.

While excited about the installation of the fence and opening of the park at a bare bones level to the public, the association stressed that work on the park is ongoing. Future developments to the parking area are needed and other improvements are planned, according to the release. These goals along with regular maintenance and care will be key to the success of the park, and association members are hopeful for the continued support of the community in future fundraising efforts.

Three sponsors were singled out for praise in the release — The Loyal Biscuit Co., Horse & Hound Veterinary Services and Brooks Trap Mill.

The park is open daily from dawn until dusk; however, snowfall amounts and the status of parking area improvements will determine whether it will be possible to remain open all winter during this first year. A complete list of park rules is posted at the entrance to the park, which is located at the end of Dwight Street, off of Route 1 on the east side of the Sunrise section of the Village Cemetery.
