BANGOR, Maine — Two out-of-state men accused of trying to sell more than 1,900 bags of heroin in the area were among nearly 60 people indicted Thursday by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Jeremy Cruzado, 19, of Bronx, New York, and James E. McCausland, 27, of Fayston, Vermont, both were indicted on one count each of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, illegal importation of scheduled drugs and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.

The two were arrested on Aug. 11 in Old Town, after an officer stopped a car with New York plates on Stillwater Avenue near Governor’s Restaurant for allegedly driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.

The men allegedly told police they were going to visit friends at an apartment on Water Street in Old Town.

Police found 1,907 individual packages of heroin in a duffle bag in the car, according to a news released issued at the time by Old Town police. Police estimated the haul’s street value at $28,500.

In a similar case, Russell R. McAlpine, 38, of Mattawamkeag was indicted on the same three charges as the out-of-state men.

According to an Aug. 13 Maine Drug Enforcement Agency news release, McAlpine was one of two Mattawamkeag men charged with felony drug offenses on Aug. 12 after a monthlong MDEA investigation into the importation of heroin from outside the state.

During the course of that investigation, agents learned that Scott Gagnon, 45, of Mattawamkeag and others were allegedly running heroin into Maine from outside the state for resale in the Howland, Lincoln and Mattawamkeag areas. Information gathered by drug agents suggested that Gagnon and McAlpine would be returning from Massachusetts with a significant amount of heroin.

Agents located the vehicle with the two men as it traveled through Bangor on Interstate 95 and stopped it in Old Town. A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up about 1,000 bags of heroin with an estimated street value of nearly $30,000.

Gagnon did not appear on the list of indictments issued on Thursday.

If convicted, Cruzado, McCausland and McAlpine each face up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on the trafficking charge alone.
