KENNBEUNK, Maine — A truck driver likely fell asleep at the wheel when his rig overturned in the Maine Turnpike service plaza in Kennebunk Monday morning, according to state police.
Paul Comeau, 67, of Leeds, lost control of his rig in the northbound service plaza, hit a sign and two light posts before the truck came to rest on its side, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
The crash occurred around 7:30.
The truck slid about 100 feet in the parking lot and narrowly missed striking a motorhome that was occupied by Bonnie and Kerry Bowden of Belmont, both of whom escaped injury, McCausland said.
Comeau was not pinned in the cab but Kennebunk firefighters assisted in getting him out, and he was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center for injuries not considered life-threatening.
The truck, owned by Chapman Trucking of Auburn, was hauling crushed glass, which spilled into the parking lot as the box trailer split open.
Comeau will likely face charges as the investigation continues.
