BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University Eagles outscored the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers 21-4 over the last 7 minutes, 46 seconds of the second quarter and rolled to a 73-56 women’s basketball victory in a mutual North Atlantic Conference opener Tuesday night.
The Eagles (1-1 overall) turned in a balanced scoring attack with 18 points from Victoria McIntyre, and Kenzie Worcester and Chandler Guerrette each put in 15. McIntyre also had six rebounds, and Worcester notched three steals.
Meghan Smith paced UMF (1-4 overall) with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Kennadi Grover chipped in with 13 points and five assists. UMF outrebounded Husson 43-37.
After Smith hit a jumper with 7:51 left in the second quarter to cut Husson’s lead to 21-16, the Eagles rattled off a 21-4 scoring surge. Darla Morales started the surge with a layup, and McIntyre added a jumper 40 seconds later.
McIntyre went on to score six more points to spark the scoring run while Worcester chipped in with five points.
UMF shot 43.8 percent from the field (21 of 48), while Husson hit 37.5 percent of its shots (30 of 80).
Maine 82, Colby 42
At the Cross Insurance in Bangor, the Division I University of Maine Black Bears took a 47-17 halftime lead over Division III Colby and rolled to the victory over the Mules of Waterville.
Maine improved to 6-3 and Colby (4-1) suffered its first loss.
Sigi Koizar hit 4 of 6 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to lead the Black Bears. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Liz Wood contributed eight points and 13 rebounds for Maine while Chantel Charles chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
All 14 Maine players in the lineup each played at least nine minutes in the contest.
The Bears dominated the rebounding game, outrebounding the Mules 56-23, including 25 on the offensive end that they converted for 28 second-chance points.
Mia Diplock paced Colby with nine points and Carylanne Wolfington added eight.
MMA 70, Thomas 51
At Castine, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners overcome a four-point deficit at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Terriers 25-10 en route to the victory i the mutual North Atlantic Conference opener.
The Mariners maintained the lead in the second half, outscoring the Terriers 17-12 in the third quarter and 18-15 in the fourth.
Kristi Willey record 17 points, six rebounds and six steals to lead the Mariners (2-2 overall). Alayne Felix and Megan McLean each chipped in with 13 points. Felix also grabbed nine rebounds while McLean had five rebounds and four assists. Tess Clark contributed with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Katie McAllister paced Thomas (0-4) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Kelly Macomber added eight points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Mariners pressured Thomas defensively throughout the entire game, forcing the Terriers into 24 turnovers. Maine Maritime also held a 39-26 rebounding advantage, including a 17-6 edge on the offensive boards.
Bowdoin 77, USM 46
At Gorham, the Polar Bears surged to a 41-21 halftime lead to earn the win and improve to 3-2 while the University of Southern Maine slipped to 2-4.
A 10-0 Bowdoin run in the second quarter, combined with a stifling defense, saw the Polar Bears outscore the Huskies 17-6 and take the 20-point halftime lead.
Abigail Kelly recorded 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for Bowdoin. Shannon Brady contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kate Kerrigan, Lauren Petit and Marle Curle each added nine points.
Megan Pelletier paced USM (2-4) with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals. Gretchen Anderson added 10 points.
