ALTON, Maine — A 57-year-old man drowned after his canoe capsized on Sunday in a farm pond, according to officials.

Paul Malicky of Alton had gone out to tend to his bait fish traps and apparently fell when exiting the canoe, according to Maine Warden Service Cpl. John MacDonald.

Malicky’s wife called neighbors and 911, but he had gone underwater by the time help arrived, MacDonald said.

A search of the pond was conducted by Old Town, Orono and Alton firefighters and several game wardens, and Malicky’s body was found about 4:30 p.m. in 9 feet of water, MacDonald said.

The case remains under investigation.
