SOUTH BRISTOL, Maine — A 38-year-old South Bristol man was arrested Wednesday on nine counts of gross sexual assault after police alleged that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old child in Newcastle during 2013.

Brian Merryman remained Wednesday evening at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on the Class A felony counts, as well as on a warrant for failure to appear in court to face a traffic offense charge, according to a release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Merryman was convicted in 1996 of unlawful sexual contact, and later with failing to register as a sex offender. He was prohibited from having contact with a person younger than 14 years old, according to the release.

In June 2015, following a recent court ruling, he was removed from the Maine Sex Offender Registry and is no longer required to register, detectives said.
