BANGOR, Maine — A Waterville man was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court to 15 years in federal prison for illegally possessing ammunition stolen during a burglary 17 months ago, according to information posted on the court’s electronic case filing system.
Brian T. Mulkern, 35, pleaded guilty in August 2015 to one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Because of his extensive criminal record that includes convictions for burglary, robbery and misdemeanor crimes, Mulkern was determined to be an armed career criminal and sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 15 years, according to court documents.
Mulkern was arrested in August 2014 after breaking into a home in Winthrop, according to a previously published report. He allegedly knocked on the front door of the residence around noon but was ignored by a young girl, who was home alone at the time, Winthrop police Officer Tim Falvey said at the time.
The Waterville man subsequently went around to a back door and gained entry by kicking down the door, Falvey said, upon which the girl called 911 and fled down the street. Mulkern was fleeing out a back door toward his motorcycle as Falvey arrived, the officer said. He was able to wrestle Mulkern off his bike and take him into custody before he could flee.
Mulkern was indicted March 2015 by a federal grand jury.
He has been held without bail at the Kennebec County Jail since his arrest after the burglary.
