HAMPDEN, Maine — A national discount chain is considering building a store on Main Road North, near Pat’s Pizza, a company official has confirmed.

Dollar General, headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, has more than 11,500 stores nationwide, with locations in Auburn and Lewiston.

Its website describes the company as the “nation’s largest small-box discount retailer.” It sells both name brand and generic food, clothing and merchandise.

“We are currently in the due diligence phase for a new location [near] Main Road North and Schoolhouse Lane, which means we’re interested in adding a new location to Penobscot County but have not committed to doing so yet,” corporate spokesman Nolan Miles said in response to an email seeking information about the company’s plans.

Miles said that the new store, if built, would be approximately 9,000 square feet in size.

“Based on our current timeline, I anticipate a decision will not be made on this project until mid-summer,” he said.

A site plan for the proposed store is scheduled to be reviewed by the town’s planning board Feb. 24.

“When choosing store locations, meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority,” Miles said. “The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice. We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three- to five-mile radius, or 10-minute drive. We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.”

Miles said that the store would employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the its needs.

The chain earlier looked at locations in Eddington.
