BANGOR, Maine — Electric company workers were on the job Wednesday restoring power to thousands of customers left in the dark by high winds overnight that brought down wires in several parts of the state.
Winds gusted as high as 73 mph in Eastport at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou. Other significant gusts were reported at Brownville, 65 mph at 10 p.m., and Bar Harbor, 61 mph at 8:15 p.m., according to the weather service. Coastal areas saw regular gusts between 55 and 60 mph.
Top wind gusts reported by the NWS Gray station were 68 mph at Matinicus at 7:38 p.m. and 52 mph at Bristol. The Portland Jetport recorded a 43 mph gust.
Trees and tree limbs came down on power lines in numerous locations because of the blustery weather.
Emera Maine reported 2,368 customers without electricity as of 1 p.m., Wednesday, most located in Washington and Penobscot counties. At the peak of the outages, nearly 10,000 were affected.
Just over 200 CMP customers were still without power early Wednesday afternoon, the majority in Hancock and Waldo counties.
