CARIBOU, Maine — Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Caribou are monitoring a low-pressure system that could bring up to 8 inches of snow to the St. John Valley on Thursday night and into Friday.
The Caribou forecast center has posted a winter storm watch, effective Thursday night through Friday afternoon, for northwestern and northeastern Aroostook County.
Snow, sleet and freezing rain and ice accumulations of a quarter to a third of an inch are expected in those areas, with the most snow expected in the St. John Valley.
In Somerset, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Hancock and Washington counties, precipitation is expected to start as snow late Thursday night before transitioning over to freezing rain on Friday, according to the weather service.
The National Weather Service’s Gray forecast center was expecting light snow and sleet overnight Wednesday to possibly change over to freezing rain by early Thursday morning in southern and western parts of the state.
Also, a weather front was expected to become stationary across New England on Thursday causing periods of light snow, sleet and rain in the region during the day.
A slick morning commute can be expected statewide Friday.
