PORTLAND, Maine — A local man who admitted to robbing two banks at gunpoint last year was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to more than 12 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Francis J. Ready, 59, of Portland pleaded guilty in November 2015 to charges of armed robbery and using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

Ready was sentenced to five years and three months in prison on the armed robbery count and to a consecutive seven years on the gun charge. He also was sentenced to five years of supervised release after completing his sentence.

The charges arose out of the armed robberies of TD Bank on Oct. 3, 2015, and of Bangor Savings Bank on Oct. 12, both in Portland, the U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday in a press release.

In both instances, Ready used a firearm to rob the banks. He absconded with $2,846 from TD Bank and with $14,189 from Bangor Savings. He was apprehended by a Portland police officer on Oct. 12 in a nearby parking area with a revolver in his possession, according to a previously published report.

No one was injured in the robberies.

Ready faced up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the bank robbery charge and a mandatory minimum consecutive sentence of seven years on the gun charge.
