CALAIS, Maine — The Calais American Legion Post 3 and the VFW Post 9779 are working together to raise $3,000 to install two flagpoles at Calais Triangle Park.
Michael Mclean, commander of the Legion Post, said the two groups want to install two 25-foot flagpoles and purchase lights and flags. An American flag and POW/MIA flag will share the pole on the left-hand side of the park stage, and the Maine flag will be on the right-hand side.
During the summer, area businesses sponsor concerts at the park. The veterans’ groups want to hold ceremonies before each concert and before other activities at the park, he said.
“It’s just a little sentimental thing to keep the flags flying,” Mclean said.
Fundraising started three weeks ago.
The groups hope to have the flagpoles installed before concerts start in June, he said.
