BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested Monday afternoon after he allegedly fired several shots in the air near his Adams Street apartment.

Police were called to the area between Essex and Adams streets about 3 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing five or six gunshots. A resident of a nearby Essex Street apartment told police she looked behind her building to check the noise and saw a naked man with a gun.

Officers arrived to investigate and were led to Stewart Gramlich, 29, who was inside his apartment at 17 Adams St., near where the shots were reported, according to Bangor police spokesman Sgt. Tim Cotton.

Gramlich left the apartment without incident about 3:45 p.m. after police spoke to him, and he was placed in the back of a police SUV. He was shirtless when arrested.

No injuries were reported.

Gramlich faces a charge of reckless conduct with a firearm, which could be elevated to an aggravated charge after continued investigation.

Cotton said police will try to get a warrant to search Gramlich’s apartment.

“We do believe that any firearms involved in this incident are still inside the apartment,” Cotton said.

Officers blocked off traffic on Essex and Adams streets between State and York streets while they investigated.

“[Gramlich] has not told us why it happened,” Cotton said.

According to the criminal history that the Bangor Daily News obtained from the State Bureau of Identification, Gramlich was fined $450 for a disorderly conduct conviction in May 2006. A theft by unauthorized taking charge filed against him at that time was dismissed.

Also dismissed were a criminal mischief charge from 2007 and a criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon charge from 2009, according to his rap sheet.

Gramlich remained at Penobscot County Jail Monday night. His bail has been set at $5,000 cash, a jail official said.
