OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A young Bangor woman was touched by an Old Orchard Beach police officer’s act of kindness.

Taylor Ronan said she drove to Portland from Bangor on Thursday night to pick up her sister at the train station, but the train was delayed. She said she decided to kill some time by going to Old Orchard Beach.

Ronan said she sat on the beach for 15 minutes when her sister called and said her train wasn’t going to arrive because of mechanical issues.

She said she went back to her car and noticed her wallet had been stolen out of the center console.

Ronan called the Old Orchard Beach Police Department. She said she was afraid she wasn’t going to be able to get back home to Bangor because she only had a quarter of a tank of gas.

Ronan said she was “blessed to meet the most amazing police officer,” Sgt. Gerard Hamilton.

“He greeted me with kindness and a smile, and was willing to do whatever he could do to try and find my wallet for me (even though I’m sure he has better things to be doing),” Ronan said in a Facebook post. “Then, the most amazing thing happened. He asked how much gas I had to get back, and I said; ‘Only a quarter tank but I would make my way home somehow.’”

Ronan said Hamilton wouldn’t take no for an answer, followed her to a local 7-Eleven and filled up her tank with his own money. She said he even pumped it for her.

“He is the most amazing [police officer] I’ve ever met! I’m so thankful for his kindness and willingness to help me I had to share this story because it really touched my heart and showed me a little kindness goes a long way,” Ronan said.
