ROCKLAND, Maine — A former sheriff’s deputy has been hired as the assistant harbor master for Rockland.

Mark Tibbetts’ duties in the position will include overseeing the operation of the city-owned fish pier, according to Assistant City Manager Audra Caler-Bell.

Tibbetts worked for 17 years in law enforcement, including with the Rockport Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corp.

“He is an avid outdoorsman and family man and enjoys spending free time with his four children hunting, fishing and camping,” Caler-Bell said in a news release.

“I am looking forward to working with the community and citizens of Rockland to ensure the harbor continues to be a safe and enjoyable place to work and visit,” Tibbetts is quoted in the news release.

Tibbetts will be paid $48,000. He will succeed longtime fish pier manager Al Gourde who, after 14 years with the city, announced in February that he was retiring effective June 30.

Matthew Ripley was hired as harbormaster in March to succeed Ed Glaser.
