The “Presumpscot Python” has emerged for a third reported time, and it’s generated a lot of discussion online. (It even has its own parody Twitter account.)
Here’s what BDN commenters had to say about Westbrook’s celebrity snake.
Many made jokes:
Leeroy Ten: “Either the chupacabra or Big Foot will take care of that snake before too long.”
Dr. SteveyDee: “Sounds like it is time to break out the shot gun!!!!!!! Snake skin boots anyone?”
Dwneast: “Hah! This story conjures up images of the upcoming GOP Convention. An invasive constrictor snake, woefully out of his element, in the Presumpscot River.”
Some warned that it could be a bigger issue than one snake:
SingleTrackGirl: “If its a pregnant female or finds a mate when [it’s] not captive Maine could well have a serious problem with this invasive species”
NarthWoods: “Just think about the Everglades with all of those invasive species of snakes that have been let loose and mated. They have these yearly hunts, contests actually, and there are some HHUUUGGGGEEEE snakes in there.”
One even told another snake story:
NarthWoods: “When my daughter was about 11 she acquired a balled python. She loved it. One night, when we were both gone, a person broke into the house. The only thing that was missing was the snake! I knew who the culprit was and I contacted him. Yep. He had gotten drunk, came to the house and stole the snake and rode with it wrapped around him from Orono to Old Town (on his bike!). Then when I demanded he return it he said that it had gotten loose in his house and was now somewhere in the heat duct system. It took a week for it to come out. Then this person put it in a briefcase and sent it back to Orono in a taxi. When we opened the briefcase it was cold and almost dead. My daughter warmed it, breathed into it and got it going again. But the poor thing had really had quite an adventure.
Alcohol: It rots the brain and makes one do really stupid things.”
One was terse about the snake’s fate:
North Woods Gnome: “Pythons don’t know about Maine winters. They aren’t wired to hibernate like our native snakes do. It will die.“
