BOWDOIN, Maine — Three people were injured and one faces charges following a single-vehicle crash late Wednesday night that police believe involved alcohol and speed.
Robert Mathews Jr., 28, of Bath lost control of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck as he drove around a curve on Route 138 in heavy fog. The truck overturned, rolling several times before coming to rest on its roof and wedged against a group of trees, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a release Thursday.
Mathews and one passenger, 16-year-old Emily Freeman of Topsham, were thrown from the cab of the truck as it overturned, according to McCausland.
A second passenger, Caleb Donaldson, 19, of Woolwich, was freed from the truck by firefighters from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Topsham, McCausland said.
All three were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with multiple injuries.
Mathews was listed in serious condition and Donaldson in good condition Thursday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Freeman was no longer listed as a patient at CMMC.
McCausland said police do not believe any of the three were wearing seat belts.
Charges likely will be filed against Mathews after police consult with the district attorney, he said.
