Cosgrove named football foundation president
BRUNSWICK — The Howard Vandersea Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation announced Thursday that chapter president Marty Ryan will step down and former University of Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove will succeed him as chapter president.
Cosgrove stepped down last fall following a successful 23-year tenure in Orono that saw him win a school-record 129 games and five FCS postseason appearances.
The Chapter has also announced that the Maine High School Coach of the Year Award will be named in honor of long-time head coach John Wolfgram. A legendary high school coach in the state, Wolfgram retired from his 45-year coaching career last fall that saw him win 10 state titles at Madison, Gardiner, South Portland and Cheverus high schools.
Roy resigns as Avalanche coach, VP
Patrick Roy resigned as coach and vice president of the hockey operations of the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, citing a lack of a voice within the team’s decision-making process.
Colorado executive vice president/general manager Joe Sakic confirmed the move and noted that the club will begin a search for a new coach immediately.
“For the past three years, I have carried out my duties as head coach and vice president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche with energy, passion and determination,” the 50-year-old Roy said in the statement.
“I have thought long and hard over the course of the summer about how I might improve this team to give it the depth it needs and bring it to a higher level. To achieve this, the vision of the coach and VP-hockey operations needs to be perfectly aligned with that of the organization. He must also have a say in the decisions that impact the team’s performance. These conditions are not currently met.”
Georgia Tech names Griffin interim AD
Georgia Tech named Paul Griffin interim athletic director and formed a search committee charged with locating a long-term replacement for Mike Bobinski.
Griffin had 11 years experience at Georgia Tech as associate athletic director to Dave Braine and then to Dan Radakovich. Griffin also had a previous stint as interim AD.
Bobinski left for the same position at Purdue. He was hired at Georgia Tech in January 2013.
He was athletic director at South Florida for 15 years.
After his tenure in Tampa came to abrupt end in March 2001, when he was forced to resign by USF President Judy Genshaft for alleged racial discrimination within the women’s basketball program, he spent several months as Arkansas State athletic director before landing at Georgia Tech.
A nine-person committee will be finalized before Griffin starts his interim post Aug. 29.
